About the Foundation

The Janet Aiko Sekiguchi Foundation was started in 2005 by a group of Janet's college friends as a memorial to her person and her legacy . She was passionate about justice, education, Jesus, and her friends. Thoughtful, artistic, funny, and loyal, Janet impacted many people in her life as a friend and as an educator. Tragically, after suffering from mental health issues for many years, she took her own life in 2002 at the age of 25. The Janet Aiko Sekiguchi Foundation honors Janet's legacy by investing in communities and causes consistent with these passions and struggles.

Foundation board members currently include Valerie Chu, Judson Bouchard, David Hong, Kim Hsu, Thomas Lee, Mark Paredes, Sal Sanchez and Andrew Wong. We are grateful that Judson, Kim and Thomas joined the board in the spring of 2021. They have reenergized and inspired us to refresh our mission and our approach to remembering Janet.

Since shortly after its start, the Foundation has supported individual educators and Christian ministry workers serving in urban environments. Starting in 2022, our new approach is to partner with schools in historically marginalized communities to support innovative educator- and student-initiated programs that promote intellectual growth, racial & social justice, community development, and mental health. We believe we can make a bigger impact in communities and better support grassroots innovation by partnering with school communities in underserved neighborhoods to provide up to $10,000 per year to fund one or more teacher- and student-initiated projects to grow and serve those communities.

The Janet Aiko Sekiguchi Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charity and all donations are tax deductible, as well as eligible for employer matching and donor-advised funds. We invite you to make a contribution to the Janet Aiko Sekiguchi Foundation using one of the options below.

eHigh held its third annual expo. This event marks the conclusion of their 3-year grant. As we noted before, eHigh reports that they are now in a place to be able to continue this program beyond these three years of funding. We’re happy to report that the entrepreneurship program that our grant helped launch is thriving and we are hopeful that it will continue impacting students for years to come.

DesignerCon 2024

Students from eHigh were able to once again attend the annual DesignerCon, held in Las Vegas. This year they were able to take 35 students and 4 staff chaperones. They took a charter bus and made a same-day turnaround trip to Las Vegas for the event. The longer trip gave the teachers a unique opportunity to bond with the students, allowing them to connect on a deeper level.
